One of the oldest meditation techniques in the world is also one of the simplest — repeating a single sacred sound.

Japa, the repetition of a mantra, is among the oldest documented meditation techniques, practiced across nearly every Indian spiritual tradition. Its simplicity is its power: a single sound or phrase, repeated with focus, gradually quiets the mind's chatter.

Traditionally counted on a mala of 108 beads, japa can be practiced silently, whispered, or chanted aloud. Many practitioners find that the physical repetition — bead by bead — offers an anchor that pure silent meditation sometimes lacks.

You don't need a Sanskrit mantra to begin. Even a simple word like "peace" or "here," repeated with sincerity, can become a doorway into stillness.
